New Faces for the New Year

Lots of new faces in last week's class!  Though it started with just two people, a friend I danced with in high school and one of my regulars, we decided to proceed with class anyway.  To be honest, I teach so that I can dance myself just as much as I teach so that I can share my dance with you!  Just as we were getting started a familiar belly dancer joined us followed shortly by an unfamiliar face.  Though she had the time wrong for the solstice class that followed my class she ended up joining us as well!

It was really lovely as new people bring different energies, backgrounds and questions.  I've scheduled a free class Saturday January 6th from 10-11:30 am, of course at Dancing Lotus Center, to encourage more new faces.  What better way to start the new year than with a new experience for yourself?!

I hope you all enjoy this Holiday week.  Though I had originally intended to have classes all December there will be no class Thursday December 27th!  There is a yoga workshop going on in the space if you're interested.  See you for some dancing in 2013.

On Track and Online

It's offical, I'm on the Dancing Lotus Center website!  Check out my brief bio at http://dancinglotuscenter.com/about-us.  Having the DLC as a host has been great.  Their facility is so beautiful and welcoming in and of itself you can't help but to want to move and be joyous.

I feel as though I'm starting to find my groove with teaching.  The more I get to work with different students I learn new things from them that then help to guide my classes.  I love it when I have engaging students that as "why?" or "what?"  They challenge me and these questions help to drive the class in a direction they want to go, even if it's not what I had planned.

In other exciting news I'm starting to work on a new piece.  And by starting to work I mean it's in the very early, brain child stages.  I have an outline of what it will be and some soundscore ideas I've shared with dear friend and musician Tyler Knapp.  I'm not ready to share too much, but oddly enough I already have a title:  Getting to Know Jerry.

A Month of Modern Dance!

Goodness, already a month to recap.  The past four weeks have been great!  Though the classes have been small I prefer to start that way; to begin with fewer students as I get back into the swing of things and feel out what the class's interests are.

I've enjoyed seeing a wide range of ages and levels show interest in my class.  One evening I was preparing to teach class to just my friend Andrea when right at 6:30 in walked an older couple.  I was thrilled and immediately began thinking how I was going to adjust the class.  A few minutes later in walked my friend and fellow Helena dance instructor adding a whole other element!  To date this has been my favorite class.  Cleo Parker Robinson was in town so we did some movement inspired by her as well as by my experience dancing in Ghana, West Africa.

Sadly I had to cancel on the 8th as I was headed to Missoula and that was the day the storm hit so waiting until after class to leave didn't seem like a good idea.  The payoff is all the more greater, however, as I was inspired and re-energized by the dance community over there.  On Friday I indulged in classes with my former professors, the lovely Nicole Bradley Browning and Heidi Jones Eggert.  I even got to see some dance as Weber Dance from Boston happened to be in town.  Saturday morning I took a master class with Artistic Director, Jody Weber, and after the show had a chance to share a drink with Jody and her dancers.  It was a great weekend and I'm left even more excited to share this wonderful form.

Hope to see you in class soon.

P.S.  The seed has been planted for a new work in collaboration with musician Tyler Knapp.  Super excited!  More to come as it is only an idea as of yet :)

One Class Down...
and I had a great time dancing for two solid hours with some of the lovely Oula girls.  After a great Oula class we continued for another hour...and an hour goes by so quickly!  We're going to continue playing with some of the movement we started last week and go in some new directions, as well.  I still need to get more posters up, but hopefully people are starting to see them around town.

In less than two weeks I will finally begin teaching dance again!  I'll be teaching a contemporary class for adults at Dance Lotus, Thursday evenings 6:30-7:30, $5 drop-in.  Starting a blog was a last minute idea as a result of wanting some sort of "website" on my business cards, the business cards being a last minute idea so that I have something tangible to hand to people I tell my class about.

Though I work in health insurance by day, by night and weekend I'm an artist.  I love dancing whether that means grabbing a few friends and heading down to the bar for a DJ, going to my twice weekly Oula class or jamming with my old University of Montana School of Dance colleagues.

Other arts are newer to me and something I've begun dabbling in for fun.  I've always liked being crafty, something I think is in my blood passed down from my mother and grandmother...beadwork, painting, sewing and otherwise designing jewelry and curios mostly.

Anyway, this is just my start...more photos and posts to follow!
